Claude Account Safety Guide

Why do Claude accounts get banned?

Last updated: · Independent guide

Short answer: According to Anthropic’s Help Center there are three main reasons: repeated Usage Policy violations, creating an account from an unsupported region, and Terms of Service violations. Most “unexplained” bans fall into the first two.

Reason 1: Unsupported region

You were in an unsupported region when you signed up or used Claude, or your company is headquartered in, or controlled from, one. A ban weeks after signup can still be for this reason. Remote access doesn’t change where you are.

Reason 2: Usage Policy violations

These include malicious code and cyberattacks, weapons-related harm, fraud and spam, privacy violations, harmful content involving minors, and election manipulation. A new policy taking effect on November 12, 2026 also covers sustained, needless abuse directed at Claude. API customers usually get warnings first.

Reason 3: Terms of Service violations

FAQ

What ban reasons do X users report most?

Most often, a vague “suspicious signals” notice with no detail, and being in an unsupported region. Next come subscription changes, shared or multiple accounts, automation and content issues.

Are these self-reported reasons reliable?

No. They're personal guesses that can't be verified, and they suffer from survivorship bias. Anthropic's policies are the authority.

Will Anthropic tell me exactly why I was banned?

Usually not. Notices tend to cite a general reason, such as a Usage Policy violation. If you think it's a mistake, sign in and appeal at claude.ai/restricted.

I was banned right after paying. Was it my card?

Paying isn't a violation in itself, but subscribing or upgrading can trigger an eligibility review. If you're outside a supported region or your details aren't accurate, that's often when a ban lands.
